That instinct — to take fringe phenomena seriously enough to actually test them — is the most defensible part of his legacy, even where his conclusions didn’t hold up.

Grinberg’s central claim was a reversal of the standard neuroscience assumption. Conventional neuroscience treats consciousness as something the brain generates — a byproduct of electrochemical activity. Grinberg proposed instead that consciousness is something the brain decodes, from an underlying field of pure information he called the Lattice.
In his model, the Lattice is a structure that contains all possible information — a concept he drew partly from physicist David Bohm’s “implicate order,” a real and seriously discussed (if minority) idea in theoretical physics about reality having an enfolded, holographic substructure. According to Grinberg, your neural field interacts with this Lattice the way a radio tunes into a signal already present in the air — your brain isn’t producing the broadcast, it’s decoding it. The more coherent and organized your neural activity, he argued, the more refined your decoding becomes.
The “Transferred Potential” Experiments
Grinberg’s most cited attempt to support his theory came from a series of experiments starting in 1987. Two participants who had meditated together were placed in separate, electromagnetically shielded Faraday chambers. One was shown flashes of light while the other sat in darkness. In roughly a quarter of trials, Grinberg reported, the isolated participant’s brain showed an evoked response at almost the same moment as the stimulated one — something he called a “transferred potential,” interpreted as evidence the two brains were coupled through the Lattice.
These results were published, including a 1994 paper co-authored with physicist Amit Goswami framing the effect in terms of quantum nonlocality. It’s a real, citable piece of research history — which is exactly why it matters to look honestly at what happened next.
Grinberg’s transferred-potential experiments were never independently replicated in a way the wider scientific community accepted. Critics, including neuroscientist E. Roy John, pointed to weak controls, small sample sizes, and possible electromagnetic artifacts. Later attempts by other labs to replicate the effect — including a published commentary by Wackermann and colleagues — reported only subtle, inconsistent signals, not a confirmation of Grinberg’s original finding. Why He Disappeared — And Why That Shouldn’t Be the Point
On December 8, 1994, Grinberg left his Mexico City home and was never seen again. He left behind his belongings, his family, and an unfinished research program — including plans to test the Lattice using laser-based brain probing. No body, no confirmed motive, and no resolution has ever surfaced. A documentary, The Secret of Dr. Grinberg, later explored the case in depth without reaching a firm conclusion.
The disappearance gets repeated constantly in online retellings of his story, and it’s genuinely strange. But it’s worth separating from the theory itself — an unsolved disappearance doesn’t make a scientific claim more or less true. Treating the mystery as evidence for the Lattice is exactly the kind of reasoning shortcut this site tries to avoid.

The most accurate answer is: it’s a real, documented scientific hypothesis that was tested and did not hold up — not a proven theory, and not a hoax either. Grinberg deserves credit for designing actual controlled experiments around questions most neuroscientists wouldn’t touch. The Lattice as a literal cosmological structure failed to survive independent scrutiny. That’s a normal outcome in science, not a scandal.
What does have solid independent support is the piece Grinberg built his theory around: that focused, coherent mental states change measurable brain activity, and that synchronized attention between people (like two people meditating together) is a real, observable phenomenon — just not proof of a non-local “field” connecting their minds. The metaphor of the Lattice is worth knowing for how it reframes “tuning in” as something structural rather than mystical. The literal physics claim is not something to build a manifestation practice on top of.
You don’t need the Lattice to be literally true to take something real from Grinberg’s framing: that perception is an active decoding process, not a passive recording of “objective” reality, and that the coherence of your attention changes the quality of what you perceive.
